Scott Foresman & Co...
Dick and Jane (& their friends)

| Scott Foresman & Co. (Dick & Jane & their friends) | To many Americans, the simple phrase, "See Spot Run" brings a warm and nostalgic smile. Although other publishers had their child fiction stars such as Ned, Nancy, Jack, Janet, Alice, Jerry and many others... no others were as loved as Dick and Jane. Check out the books and reflect on your childhood and feel warm and cozy with the memories. Ahhh, when life was simple... Back when we only had to dial 4 to 5 digits to reach Grandma & Grandpa. Back when letters did not need zip codes to make it to their destinations. Back when we didn't lock the house in case a neighbor or friend needed something... |

Dick, Jane, Sally, Spot, Tim & Puff too! |
Remember sitting in first grade learning to read with the adventures of
Dick & Jane? Many remember their little sister Sally, Spot the black and white cocker spaniel (or the terrier of the 30's), Puff the yellow cat, Tim the teddy bear and Jack the clown. The animated stories were chocked full of family values and something children of the era could usually relate to, or at times envy. Scott Foresman and Co. first published books containing Dick and Jane in the 1930's continuing through 1965 but all first editions are not from 1930. The company introduced new titles in 1940, 1946, 1951 and 1962. In 1965, Dick and Jane's were published for the last time but with a new twist. Black children were introduced to teach the children of the late 60's to love thy neighbor, no matter the color of skin. Each decade of Dick and Jane taught strong values such as sharing, family interaction, responsibility, health, safety and helping others along with basic reading skills. W.J. Gage in Toronto published these books for Canadian schools, which were exact copies of the American editions. Catholic schools also adopted the curriculum and revised these books to include religious aspects in the stories. In approximately half of the Cathedral editions, the three children (Dick, Jane and Sally) were renamed as John, Jean and Judy. Today, Dick and Jane pre-primers and primers can still be found but are becoming more elusive. Teaching aids such as the flashcards, the paper doll cut-outs and "Our Big Book" (the large easel-supported book used to teach along with the small pre-primers) are fetching high prices due to their scarce availability. Baby boomers and the tweeners of today should still remember learning to
read with Dick and Jane. The authors and illustrators of these books were wonderfully talented and gifted because they gave us such a high level of self esteem and confidence as we learned to do the big kid thing -- READ!! Julie Breuer, Julia's Collectibles & Antiques |
